As this second week of Advent begins, we must think of Mary and her anticipation as she awaited the birth of Our Lord and Savior. In a similar manner we should be anticipating and preparing the way of the Lord. We hear John the Baptist calling us to prepare our hearts to greet the Lord!
As we light the second purple candle this weekend and the lights grow brighter on our Advent wreaths, may the light of Christ fill our homes with peace. To all our SGS families....peace and Advent blessings!

Robotics Team takes Greg Arm-Strong to SABest Competition!
The St.Gregory the Great Robotics Team participated in the SA Best (San Antonio Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology) competition on November 2, 2013 at ST. Mary’s University. The students had exactly 42 days to design a robotic arm that could undergo several obstacles in order to “create” fictional gates for a computer’s CPU system. The competition was called “The Gatekeeper Challenge.” This is the third year the robotics team has been fortunate enough to undertake the goals the SABest presents.
The students researched, discussed, planned, drew out plans and finally built( with the help of parent volunteers) a working robotic arm. The team of students were able to separate into four different groups such as the engineering notebook group, the programming group, the design group, and the building group. We also had to create, besides an engineering notebook, a marketing strategy in which a team of future “engineers” from our 8th grade class had to become business minded and find a way to market the robot to a team of real engineers with a marketing power point.
Although the team did not place amongst top 7 teams (34 teams in all) we were the highest ranking junior high team. The students excelled in their higher level thinking skills and in their ability to think quickly on
their feet when an unexpected obstacle like a broken pulley became a reality. They also learned how to use mechanical tools as well as power tools to complete the robotic process.
Congratulations to our Robotics Team! And thank you Mrs. Mayhan, for your direction and encouragment
of the team!

Some of our saints from our All Saints Day celebration!
Celebrating saints and their lives of holiness!
On Friday, the students at St. Gregory the Great brought the lives of the saints to our classrooms and church as they participated in a very special All Saints Mass and saint parade. Each child selected a saint that they wanted to learn more about or that had important significance to them. Many students dressed as their saint - while the 4th graders dressed like their saint and carried the saint doll they had made.
Look for the 4th grade saints to be on display soon in the Library!
If you have some pictures of your saintly students - in their saint attire - please send them to Kay Hanson at the school office. We are preparing a gallery of saints to share with you!

The cool Sunday weather made for a beautiful race day at the Hope For the Future Run With a Mission 5K today! Several SGS parents and students came out to run and walk at Mission County Park. The Robotics Team was recognized during the Red Ribbon Pep Rally on Monday!
The Robotics Team of SGS consists of 7th and 8th graders who are given a task of designing a robot with a task to accomplish. This is the third year St. Gregory has participated in the SABest competition which stands for San Antonio Boosting Engineering Science and Technology.
This year’s competition consists of building a robotic arm which has the task of picking up different items which can be put together to build a computers “CPU.” This entails that the robotic arm must have
a gripper which can pick up various items of different shapes and sizes as well as a“brain”, which is controlled by a joystick that will command the robot arm to move in the direction toward the items to be picked up.
The process involves writing an engineering notebook, designing and testing different robotic arms, programming a brain to a joystick and a lot of patience. The robotic team consists of 7th and 8th graders who meet during afterschool hours and weekends. The program is intense as the students are given only 42 days to build a working robot before competition begins. We compete on Nov 2nd!
Dia de los Muertos...November 2nd
Spanish club has prepared a special exhibit for the Day of the Dead celebration on November 2nd. The Day of the Dead, also know has Dia de los Muertos is celebrated in Mexico. People wear special skull masks called calacas and dance in honor of their dead family members. The skulls are also placed on altars that are dedicated to the dead. The skulls symbolize death and
rebirth. They are also used to honor the dead. People visit the cemetery of their loved ones, decorate and clean the gravesites with marigold flowers and candles. They sit on blankets next to the gravesites of loved ones and eat their favorite foods.
The exhibit of items for Dia de los Muertos is in the Library - please come by and see it!

4-10pm Halloween Festival! Come join in the fun - support our school by working your homeroom booth, and bringing your whole family to enjoy the festivities!
On Tuesday, October 22, we celebrate the memorial of Blessed John Paul II. We continue to ask for his intercession for us - for the whole Church and for our families! “I plead with you--never, ever give up on hope, never doubt, never tire, and never become discouraged. Be not afraid.” ― John Paul II, Pope John Paul II: In My Own Words
Welcome to our Great Week Ahead...filled with promise, learning and new activities as we begin the 2nd quarter of the year! Students and teachers have been working hard and the fruit of our labor is seen every day. May we go forward with this new week knowing that all the saints pray for us...and may all of them, especially St. Teresa of Avila, whose feast day is this week....keep us in their prayers!
Mrs. Ramon's 2nd grade class sang during the opening prayer and ceremonies.
| |Kickfest was a great success!

SGS Box Tops/Labels Program
wants every student to participate in the October 22, 2013 Free Dress Day!
Do submit those 20 Box Tops before Oct 17. We currently have about $2,400 in Box Tops and need about $5,100 more before March 31, 2014. I have concluded that if 600 students participate in this FDD, SGS will gajin $1,200 thereby needing $3,900 only. I am deeply grateful to all the parents and students who participated in the HEB Bonus Certificate Program. These were Bonus
Box Tops for FDDs and campaign drawings. Whether the submission is for 1 FDD, 7 FDDs, Bonus Campaign Drawings, and/or the Pizza Contests, they are all “awesome.” Read more Box Tops updates here

Praying with the Blessed Mother...
The 7th grade class held their Retreat day on Tuesday, October 1st. At the end of the day, they led the entire SGS community in the Living Rosary. As we gathered in the Gym, 7th graders shared the different apparitions of the Blessed Mother and her words of encouragement. Together, we prayed the Rosary and lifted up the needs of our community.
Thank you, 7th grade, for your prayerful witness of faith and your devotion to prayer!
The 7th grade class gathers after the Living Rosary for a group picture.
Before the sun was up on Friday morning, the 8th graders were ready to head out to Mo Ranch!
The 8th graders made their way to Mo Ranch on Friday and had their first retreat for the year. The day was filled with an obstacle and ropes course, swimming, dining, laughter and fellowship! We will share more pictures of their fun next week in the Blog.

Prayer of St. Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
it is in dying that we are born again to eternal life. Amen.
Today, we celebrated the feast of St. Francis through prayer and each student received a holy card with a picture of Pope Francis and a prayer for our Pope. St. Francis, the saint whose simplicity and dedication to the Gospel rebuilt the Church, pray for us!
We begin the month of the Rosary!
We will begin October with a special remembrance of our devotion to the Blessed Mother. Join us on Tuesday at 2:15pm as we celebrate the intercessory prayer of Our Mother Mary. We will have the Living Rosary led by the 7th grade class.
The month of the Holy Rosary is October and this entire month is dedicated to the Rosary. The feast day of the Holy Rosary in particular is October 7th. The feast of the Rosary is held on October 7th in memory of the glorious and triumphant victory at the Battle of Lepanto. That battle
was the most convincing military victory that proved without a doubt the great power of the Rosary. (Taken from www.how-to-pray-the-rosary-everyday,com . Check out their website for information about the Rosary, the Rosary prayers and mysteries)
Catholic Life Sweepstakes is underway!
Check those backpacks! The sweepstakes envelopes went home with each child on Friday. In the envelope, you will find some tickets and detailed information about the sweepstakes and how SGS will benefit from each ticket sold. Thank you for helping us in this very worthwhile endearvor...with 100% of the proceeds from tickets sold going right to our school!
It is our turn to give back!
Last spring, a group of mothers (and dads!) from several Catholic schools gathered on our campus to fix and paint the ramps and stairs leading to the 4th and 5th grade classrooms. We have been asked to gather 6-8 moms who can assist with the next service project at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Floresville. We will be helping to plant and create gardens for the students to use for their Science classes...
this project will take place on Saturday, November 2nd from 9am - 12pm.
We bring shovels, gloves and elbow grease...and breakfast is provided. Service hours for time worked and drive time will be earned. Please call Kay Hanson at the school office if you can volunteer!
The Mothers of Hope organize service projects at various Catholic schools across the Archdiocese and next month is our turn to be generous as a school community!
